BIKE RIDE AND WALK FOR CLIMATE
On the morning of Saturday 31 August, a group of us from Higgins CAN caught the attention of the citizens of Ashburton with our cycle/walk for ‘No New Coal and Gas’. Bikes were bedecked with signs saying just that, while riders and non-riders wore ‘Climate Action’ t-shirts or aprons.
Using the off-road bike/walking paths, the cyclists made a tour around Ashburton, moving at a comfortable pace, and completing the circuit in about 40 minutes. This gave widespread visibility to our message. Meanwhile the non-riders positioned themselves around the shopping strip and offered ‘No New Coal and Gas’ leaflets to the pedestrians.
Upon the return of the cyclists, some joined the non-riders whilst others remained on the bikes and did circuits on the road (cautiously!) with bells ringing busily to attract attention to our cause.
The morning finished very pleasantly with coffee and snacks at one of Ashburton’s cafes. Thank you to everyone who attended – it was a fantastic morning!
The event was so enjoyable and successful that we can’t wait to do it again, and we are – on Saturday 21 September. We hope you can join us.
We plan to hold these rides regularly, approximately every 4 weeks over the coming months.

ANZ: STOP FUNDING NEW FOSSIL FUELS – DAY OF ACTION
ANZ has now poured tens of billions to fossil fuels since committing to limit global warming to 1.5°C.
WE CAN’T LET THEM CONTINUE TO GET AWAY WITH IT!
Join us outside their headquarters in Melbourne to demand climate accountability 🌏✊ and tell ANZ to stop bankrolling climate collapse!
ANZ is Australia’s number #1 fossil fuel funder – wreaking havoc on our climate and environment by continuing to pour billions into new coal, oil, and gas.
It’s time to say enough is enough!🛑
DAY OF ACTION – RALLY
Wednesday 17 July, 12pm midday
ANZ HQ, 833 Collins Street, Docklands
GREAT TURN OUT AT RECENT RALLY
Thanks to everyone who came along to the recent rally on Friday 28 June at Michelle’s office in Malvern East.
Snap rallies were held at a number of Labor politicians’ offices across the country to protest Labor’s two utterly outrageous gas project approvals – a coal seam gas project and a gas pipeline.
It was great to see such an amazing turn out from all of you at short notice – we were certainly seen and heard that day on Wattletree Rd!!
Urgent Call For Action – Protest Tomorrow (Friday 28 June)
Labor has just approved two utterly outrageous gas projects – a coal seam gas project and a gas pipeline. Grassroots climate groups are organising snap rallies at the offices of as many Labor politicians as possible TOMORROW!!
The sham of Australia’s climate change policy has been made clear in the past two weeks. No, not nuclear power.
Last Friday (21st June), while everyone was racing down nuclear-powered rabbit holes, the environment department (led by the environment minister, Tanya Plibersek) approved a coal seam gas pipeline in Queensland. The Gina Rinehart-backed project will involve the construction of up to 151 coal seam gas wells and require the drainage of about six and a half million litres of groundwater every day.
This latest climate-wrecking, koala-killing approval brings the total gas projects approved by the Albanese government to nine, on top of 5 coal mines and ten offshore oil and gas projects.
This approval “has effect until 30 June 2069”. And on Tuesday the department approved the Atlas stage 3 gas project in Queensland out to June 2080.
Those dates are rather beyond 2050 when we’re supposed to be at net zero emissions. They are also when temperatures will be well over 2C above the preindustrial average.
Read more in this Guardian article. Outrageous.
Hope to see you tomorrow. We will have signs!

URGENT CALL FOR ACTION – NO NEW GAS!!!
On Friday (9th May 2024) Federal Resources Minister Madeleine King released the Federal Government’s ‘Future Gas Strategy’ which outlines the need for new gas sources – a betrayal of the Labor Government’s commitment to the Australian and Pacific communities to deliver urgent, accelerated climate action.
Take a moment now to ring or email Michelle Ananda-Rajah to tell her that:
- Methane is a powerful climate accelerant
- You are horrified by the announcement
- Gas exploration and production is an environmental and climate disaster
- The gas industry is making a fool of the Government, ripping off the Australian economy and walking offshore with 94% of the profits they ream from this country
